35 Journaling Prompts
Journaling is what helped me during my grief journey. It allowed me to have some unfinished conversations and to express my emotions without the need to filter or be concerned about how it landed on others. That's why I created the Butterfly Years Journal.
Here are a few prompts to get you started.
- What is one memory of my loved one that brings me comfort? Describe it in as much detail as possible.
- What do I miss most about my loved one today?
- If I could have one more conversation with my loved one, what would I want to say?
- What has grief taught me about love?
- What parts of myself have changed since my loss? Which changes have surprised me?
- What am I holding onto that I may be ready to gently release?
- What small moments of hope, beauty, or peace have I noticed recently?
- How can I show myself kindness and self-care today?
- Which traditions or rituals help me stay connected to the memory of my loved one and help me honor them?
- Write about a time when you felt your loved one's presence through a memory, a place, or an unexpected moment.
- What would my loved one say to me today about moving forward?
- When grief feels overwhelming, what helps me feel grounded?
- What am I grateful for, even in the midst of my grief?
- What parts of my story deserve more compassion than judgment?
- What would I tell someone else who is walking through a similar loss?
- Finish this sentence: "Today, I choose to honor my grief by..."
- What is my most dominant emotion today, and what might it be trying to tell me?
- What is one small thing that gave me hope today, no matter how ordinary it seemed?
- Describe a moment when you smiled unexpectedly. What brought that moment to life?
- How has your loved one influenced the person you are becoming today?
- What strengths have emerged in you that you didn't recognize before your loss?
- How can you honor your loved one's legacy through the way you live your life?
- What does hope look like for you today? How is it different from what it looked like a month ago?
- Write about someone who has supported you through your grief journey. What gift have they given you?
- What does your heart need most right now?
- When you imagine your future, what possibilities bring you peace?
- How are you emerging from the chrysalis of pain to become a butterfly? What parts of yourself are beginning to bloom again?
- Describe a place where you feel calm and connected. Why does it restore you?
- What have you learned about love that only grief could have taught you?
- What new traditions could you create that celebrate both remembrance and hope?
- What would your future self thank you for doing today?
- What beautiful qualities of your loved one continue to live through you?
- What fear are you ready to replace with faith in yourself?
- Write about a challenge you've overcome since your loss. What helped you through it?
- What is one small action you can take today toward embracing hope, finding joy, and self-care?
